On November 8, 2014, IEEE's Cal Poly Pomona chapter hosted its quarterly soldering tutorial. The
soldering tutorial was started a couple years ago when students realized that soldering was a valuable
trade that universities do not normally teach in their curriculum. IEEE's purpose was to fill that void and provide Cal Poly Pomona students and members an opportunity to practice and hone their soldering skills. The tradition still continues with the help of Max Cherubin from Foothill section IEEE.
The soldering tutorial started off with some instructional videos on soldering with some comments by Robert Goya, President of IEEE Cal Poly Pomona, and Max Cherubin. Then after the videos, a presentation was given fellow IEEE members who are not new to soldering. Following the presentation, food and refreshments were provided by IEEE. Students were then allowed to begin soldering their kits with soldering irons that have been provided by IEEE. When the students completed their kits, the kits were judged by Robert Goya and Max Cherubin on their soldering technique. In the end there were five finalists who had the best soldered kits. The students listed below are the finalists of the contest:
1. Teng, Darrick
2. Dapal, Xyrine
3. Fernandez, Steven
4. Ponce, Genesis
5. Rinne, Chanelle
Overall, there was a great turn out and it would not have been possible without the guidance and funding from Max Cherubin and the Foothill Section and the current IEEE officers of Cal Poly Pomona keeping this tradition strong.
